Eugene Gilbert Austin, of Eureka, died at home on Tuesday, Octover 28, 2008 at the age of 80.

He was born July 25, 1928, in Chanute, Kansas the son of Bert and Iva (Smith) Austin. He was raised and graduated from high school in Stonewall, Oklahoma. Eugene served in the United States Army Ordinance Supply from 1946 to 1948 and the United States Army (Japan) from 1950 to 1951. He graduated from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Geology. Eugene was united in marriage to Eleanor Lewis of Reece, Kansas in June, 1954.

Eugene started his oil field career in 1952 at Thrall, Kansas, employed by Sinclair Oil and Gas. After college, Sinclair sent him to numerous oil fields in Oklahoma and the to Bucaramanga, Colombia, South America. After Colombia, he located in Eunice, New Mexico, employed by Skelly Oil Company.

In 1966, Eugene moved to Tripoli, Libya, North Africa and worked for Mobil Oil Libya, until 1977. Eugene transferred to Mobil Oil Indonesia in 1977 where he retired March 31, 1990 as an Area Production Superintendent.

Eugens is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of the home, two sons; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Norma.
