In 1880, Martha and her two children left for the Dakotas on a wagon train of 7th Day Adventists led by David Wing. He was the brother of her stepmother Chloa Wing. They settled for a time in Madison, Lake County SD (Dakota Territories)where she ran a boarding house. She remarried Alva Chapin and the family moved to homestead in Lake of the Woods County, MN.
