South Carolina Governor. After graduating from South Carolina College in 1846, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1848, and practiced law in Union, South Carolina. In addition to practicing law, he was president of Spartanburg and Union Railroad and a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1856. During the Civil War, he served as Infantry Captain in the Confederate Army. After the war, he was a member of the South Carolina Senate (1872 to 1880). Serving as President Pro Tempore of the Senate in 1880, when Governor Wade Hampton left office after being elected to the U.S. Senate, Jeter was appointed as a Democrat to the 79th Governor of South Carolina, serving September 1, 1880 to November 30, 1880. After leaving office, he again served as Pro Tempore in the South Carolina Senate until 1882. He was then appointed to the new South Carolina Railroad Commission and served until his death.
