U.S. Congressman. Educated at Bingham's Academy, he became successful in agricultural pursuits in Wilmington, North Carolina. For many years he was President of the Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad Company, was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons (1808-11) and served as Major General of the North Carolina Militia. In 1817, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the Fifteenth Congress, serving until 1819. After leaving Congress, he resumed his agricultural pursuits until his death.
