U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Harvard University in 1786, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1791 and proceeded to practice law in Salisbury, New Hampshire. He was postmaster of Salisbury, (1798-1803) and a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1807-08, 1813-14). In 1805, he was elected as a Federalist to the Ninth Congress, serving until 1807. After his term he was New Hampshire State Treasurer, (1809-11). In 1814, he was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Nicholas Gilman and served until his death at age 55.
