U.S. Senator. He graduated from South Carolina College in 1843 and became successful in agricultural planting. Entering politics, he was a member of the South Carolina State constitutional convention in 1865. Upon the readmission of the State of South Carolina to representation in 1868, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1877. Not a candidate for reelection, he was active in business venues until his death.
