US Congressman. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, he graduated from Furman University Law School, in 1927, was admitted to the bar in 1928 and practiced law in Greenville, South Carolina. He was solicitor of Greenville County Court, and solicitor of the thirteenth judicial circuit of South Carolina. During World War II, he served overseas in the United States Army and after the war, he remained in the United States Army Reserves and achieved the rank of Colonel. In 1953, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Joseph R. Bryson, reelected to the Eighty-fourth and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1969. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was a member of the South Carolina Appalachian Regional Planning and Development Commission, 1970, until his death at age 85 in Greenville, South Carolina.
