U.S. Congressman. He attended Bingham Military School, graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1886, and completed a business course at Bryant and Stratton College. He then engaged in business enterprises as a collecting teller of the Charlotte National Bank, buyer and dealer in leaf tobacco, plus manufacturing and agricultural pursuits, all in North Carolina. Entering politics, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-first Congress (1909 to 1911). Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was chairman of the Republican State Committee (1910 to 1916) and a member of the Republican National Committee (1916 to 1922). Retiring from politics, he engaged in the manufacture of woolen goods until his death.
