Miss America Pageant Winner. In 1922 at the age of 17 years old, she was crowned Miss America, and again the following year in 1923. She is the only woman to be Miss America twice, and the first high school graduate to win. She was also very close to winning Miss America 1924 but was first runner-up to Pennsylvania's Ruth Malcomson. Being called "the girl with the figure," she was soon approached with movie and vaudeville offers and even offered a place as one of the famous "Ziegfeld Girls," but nothing came to pass as her mother refused all offers. She attended Ohio State University and Ohio Wesleyan University studying art. When she finished college, she went home to care for her mother until she died. She was elected to the City of Columbus (Ohio) Hall of Fame. Pageant history shows her middle name "Catherine." She married a DuPont executive, Frederick Stanton Townley. She was enumerated age one in the 1910 Federal Census, so there is some confusion about her age. Her gravestone has 1905 instead of 1909. Her birth year on her pageant application has "1905."
