Harve was first married in Tennessee to Unknown and had three children: John D., Elizabeth and Phoebe Ann. His first wife likely died after their youngest daughter Phoebe was born in 1866. The births of his children during the Civil War align perfectly with his alternating periods of service in the TN 33rd Inf Reg, his capture, release home, rejoin, recapture and final release at the end of the war.

After his first wife died in 1866, Harve then married Mary Amanda Stephens of Alabama in 1868. They moved to Newton County, AR in the fall of 1870 and were living in Bear Creek Township, Boone County, AR by the time of the 1880 census. They moved to Ellis County Texas in the fall of 1885, along with most of the other children of his mother-in-law, Sara Ann (Little) Stephens.

Harve was also a Minister of the Gospel, although that was not his primary livelyhood. He listed his occupation as Farmer in Boone County, AR in the 1800 census. In the 1900 census for Ellis County, his occupation was Grocer. Based upon the 1900 census record, we have been able to get an approximate location of where they were living in Ellis County. This was roughly in the area of east of Maypearl and between Greathouse and Boz. History of the Greathouse Baptist Church lists that a Rev Alexander was an early pastor of that church.

J. H. Alexander is listed as the minister who married his brother-in-law, John Wiley Stephens, to Penina Mariah Dupree in Jasper, Newton County, AR in 1871. He also performed the marriages of John Wiley's brothers Joe and Frank in Newton County in 1871; also he performed the marriage of John Wiley's sister-in-law, Mary Dupree, to Andrew Jackson Hudson, Jr on 18 Feb 1875 .

His Texas death certificate lists his occupation as Preacher.
