Lawrence Cosgrove was born January 6, 1850, in Dublin, Ireland, the son of Michael Cosgrove and Mary Byrne Cosgrove. At a very early age (under a year) he and his family migrated to Canada where they settled. Lawrence's father (Michael) died in 1854 when Lawrence was 3. His mother, Mary Byrne Cosgrove later married Edward Wamsley and she had several children - half brothers and sisters to Lawrence. Lawrence later moved to Detroit where for several years he was the owner of a carriage manufactory there. In 1874 he met and married Honora Troy in Detroit and they later moved to Villard, MN where they became among the first farmers to settle there. They had nine children, five of whom survived to adulthood: Thomas, John, Mary (Mamie), Josephine, and Lawrence. Lawrence Cosgrove died on May 3, 1918. He was a deeply religious Catholic and known as a devoted husband and father. His funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Angel's Church in Sauk Centre, MN with the Reverand Father Fearson officiating. His wife Honora and daughter Mary (Mamie) Cosgrove Smith are buried next to him.
