US Congressman, Civil War Confederate Army Officer. During the Civil War, he reached the rank of Major in the Confederate Army. After the war, he was the Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina from 1885 to 1889. In 1911, he was elected to represent North Carolina in the United States House of Representatives. He served until he died in office in 1930. At the time of his death, he was the last remaining Civil War officer (Confederate or Union) to serve in Congress.
