United States Naval Sailor. At age 25, she was a Yeowoman attached to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. After she died of influenza, she became the first woman to receive full military honors from the United States Armed services upon her death. A graduate from Pinkerton Academy and Bryant and Stratton’s Business College, she joined the Navy and was a secretary at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
