Indian Campaigns Medal of Honor recipient. Served as a First Sergeant, Company I, 9th U.S. Cavalry at the foothills of the Cuchillo Negro Mountains, New. Mexico. On August 16, 1881, in a running 3 to 4 hour flight, he skillfully conducted his detachment. With coolness, bravery, and devotion to duty he stood by his commanding officer in an exposed position under heavy fire from a large party of Indians and saved the lives of 3 of his comrades. He was one 18 African American Buffalo Soldiers that was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions during the Indian Wars.
