Born February 4, 1912, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Elihu and Ida Burch Hughes. She had one brother, Kenneth, who preceded her in death. She attended Hooge Street School and graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1930. She received her Bachelor's from Shepherd College and her Master's Degree from Shippensburg University. She taught English and Latin in Martinsburg High School and North Junior High School and also at schools in Hagerstown, MD.
As a youngster she was confirmed a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Martinsburg and after her marriage, became a member of Tuscarora Presbyterian Church. She and Edward Newton Thatcher, who died November 28, 1969, were married on August 21, 1939, in Baltimore.
Mrs. Thatcher was a 4-H leader, a Cub Scout leader and a member of the old Farm Women's Club. She was active in her church, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She and her husband were former owners of Thatcher's Dairy.
She is survived by a son and daugher, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kelly Marie Thatcher.
A private graveside service led by Rev. John Cushwa was held December 17, 2011.
