Richard was born in Montclair, New Jersey and lived there all of his life.
He enlisted in the Marines 13 November 1968, at the New York Recruiting Office.
Richard graduated from Parris Island MCRD with Platoon 3003 and after infantry training, he was issued orders for Vietnam.
Richard arrived in Vietnam 26 August 1967 and was assigned to 3rd Platoon, Echo Company, 2nd
Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Richard died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head from hostile enemy fire, while Echo Company was participating in Operation Auburn to drive out the NVA troops and Viet Cong regulars, at LZ Hawk, Bao An Dong, Go Noi Island.
Richard was single and served his country for 3 years, 1 month and 15 days and was KIA #19,467. He had been in Vietnam for 4 months and 2 days.
Richard died when he was 22 years, 1 month and 12 days old.
Survived by his parents, Charles O and Dorothy May Carlson, his two sisters, Cheryl and (----), a brother, Ernest Andrew all of 6 Bellair Dr,
