John C. Adams was born in Prairieton Township in Christian County, just west of Moweaqua, Illinois. He was the youngest son of Ellington and Elizabeth Adams. He was a brother to Isom, Joseph, Randall, George William, James, Martin, Rachel (Rice), Martha (Bramblett) and Lucy. He married Martha Ellen Stogdale on February 24, 1867 in Randolph County, Missouri. Their children included Ada (Kirkman), Ellington, Eureka (Taylor), Zora (McGrath), Jessie (Bramblett) and Gracie (who died in infancy). John and his wife were long-time residents of the Moweaqua, Illinois area but also lived in Santa Cruz, California for several years. John and Martha are buried in unmaked graves within the Adams-Gorden Cemetery.
