U.S. Congressman. He attended the Transylvania University, graduated from the Lebanon Law School in 1850, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Franklin, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, in 1853, was a member of the Provisional Congress of the Confederacy from Tennessee and served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1875-83). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
