Fighter Pilot - Tuskegee Airmen of World War II
Luke Joseph Weathers, Jr., passed away October 15, 2011 at his home in Tucson, AZ.
He was born December 16, 1920, in Grenada, MS, and attended Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans.
He served in the Tuskegee Airmen from 1942 to 1945. War-time accomplishments include downing two German fighter planes that attacked Army Air Force bombers he was escorting, as well as in 2007, being among 300 airmen who received the Congressional Gold Medal for their service in the war.
The Tuskegee Airmen were an all-Black aerial combat unit assembled during World War II, which rose to excellence in the face of racism and segregation; successfully carrying out missions throughout Northern Africa and Europe and helping to win decisive victories for the Allied forces.
Despite his amazing accomplishments, he is remembered as a humble man. There was no bravado or bragging, He was a kind, humble person always willing to be engaged and doing things for his country and for his community. He worked to open doors for women and minorities.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Moore Weathers; sons, Luke J. Weathers III, Andre M. Weathers; daughters, Wanda W. Smith, Renee W. Powell, Trina W. Boyce; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
His funeral was held October 29, 2011, at St. Therese-Little Flower Catholic Church in Memphis, TN.
Graveside ceremony with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on January 20, 2012.
