"MRS. ANNIE MCCANDLESS DEAD
Mrs. Annie McCandless, widow of the late Brigadier General William McCandless, elected Secretary of Internal Affairs in Pennsylvania in 1875, died on Wednesday at 1509 Catherine Street, where she took up residence some four years ago. She had been ill for the last three years. She is survived by a son, William McCandless, Jr."
Although she claimed to be married to General McCandless, it may have been a common law marriage.

"A DISPUTED SUCCESSION
Continuation of the Evidence as to the Estate of the Late General McCandless
Register of Wills Rex heard yesterday morning further evidence in regard to the proper disposition to be made of the property in the case of the estate of the late General William McCandless. The value of the estate is estimated at $5000. General McCandless died intestate, and soon after his decease his brother, Mr. John McCandless, as next of kin, applied for letters of administration. On these representations the letters were granted to him and two nephews of the deceased, one of whom is living in Pittsburg, and the other in New Mexico. Later on Mrs. Annie McCandless appeared before the register, claiming she was the widow of the deceased, and asked that the letters given to McCandless be revoked, and power to administer the estate be given to her. A hearing on the case was held on Monday, at which several witnesses testified that they considered the contestant as the wife of the deceased. Yesterday Elizabeth Murphy, of Mount Holly, N. J., testifies that she lived with the family of the deceased at their home, Wharton street, below Broad, and that she knew the contestant, whose maiden name was also McCandless, as the wife of the general. A twelve-year-old son, who was born while she lived with the family, was identified by several other witnesses, as the child of the couple. The case went over until Monday."

Another hearing took place in the McCandless will case yesterday. Mr. John McCandless' counsel promised to prove that Mrs. Annie McCandless was never married to the deceased general, and asserted that she had declined to sue him for desertion on the ground that he was not her husband. This latter statement Mrs. Elizabeth Zelsenweiss, of No. 992 Randolph street, was called to prove. She testified to the conversation in which the remark was made, and also stated that the lady had introduced a man named Jenkins as her husband, and complained that he did not treat her well. Owen McCarthy, of No. 705 Lloyd street, gave similar evidence, and the hearing was being continued till next Monday."
