Had Been Prominent In
Many Activities
John G. Abraham, 78, retired farmer and former world traveler, died at his home here at 11 o'clock Sunday evening after an extended illness. He had been ill at intervals the last several months, had shown much improvement, traveled around considerably in making the purchase of a farm and then became seriously ill only a few weeks ago.
Mr. Abraham was an ardent supporter of the good reads program of two to three decades ago and spent much time promoting the surfaced highway program in Southeaster Iowa.
He had traveled widely taking world tours and enjoying the sights of the countries visited immensely. Favored with ability to describe his tours vividly, he lectured extensively speaking before hundreds of groups in the years since he made the trips. Episodes and observations were lifted from the tours and presented, often dramatically, for the entertainment of children or adults as the audience might be.
He took and active interest in politics for many years and served as county Republican central committee chair- man. In more recent years, he had lessened his responsibilities and confined his interest largely to the local Kiwanis club of which he was a charter member and to the management of his Farms. As a hobby the last few years, he had made a study of government finances, subscribing to treasury reports and keeping posted on the government spending policy and indebtedness as compared with federal income.
Beside his wife, he is survived by a son, Fred Abraham, two sisters, Mrs. George Wright, Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. Kate Bourn, San Francisco, Calif. And a half-brother, Frank Abraham. A daughter, a son and one sister preceded him in death. Mrs. Lot Abraham is his step-mother. Mrs. And Mrs. Abraham were married 54 years ago last Aug.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Cookes Funeral Home.
