Dorliska was born in New York, probably in Otsego or Herkimer County. Her parents were Mary Crouch and Charles Bates. Dorliska appears to have been the 4th of 12 children, including Sarah and Lucy Ann who are also buried in Cuba Cemetery.

In 1826, when Dorliska was 9, she moved with her family to Hiram, Portage, Ohio. There, in 1836, at age 18, she married 17-year old John Stevenson, who was born in Ireland and became a farmer. It is likely that their first 5 children (all boys) were born in Hiram.

By 1850, Dorliska and John and their family were living and farming in Monroe, Iowa. Her father, some sibs and other members of the family were already in Monroe. Sadly, Dorliska's mother and 2 brothers had died in 1843 when her parents and the youngest children were part of a wagon trip from Ohio to Iowa.
