Husband of Mary K. (Howard) Abernathy (1849-1916). Son of William Abernathy and Lucy (Allen) Abernathy. Alexander was a Civil War Veteran. He was a Sergeant in Company I, 16th Wisconsin Infantry. According to the application for his military headstone, he served in the Civil War under the name of "John Smith" although Civil War records show him listed as Alexander "Abernethy." He was living in Darlington, Wisconsin in September 1861 and enlisted on September 26, 1861 as a Corporal in Company I, 16th Wisconsin Infantry. He was promoted to Sergaent and First Full Sergeant and was mustered out on July 12, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. Alexander's regiment was involved in several major battles of the Civil War including Shiloh, Corinth, Kenesaw Mountain and several battles in Atlanta.
