She was the daughter of Jacob and Anna Barbara (Biebel) Koehler. Her parents came to the U.S. from Germany in January 1870, along with her maternal grandmother, Catherine (Spindler) Biebel, and an uncle, Jacob Biebel.
She was married in 1896 to Alexander Hamilton Dunning. Their son Thomas Jefferson Dunning was born July 21, 1898. Her siblings were: Anna, died young of Cholera; Jacob, died in 1933; Fredrick, married Emma Mae Huss, March 26, 1915; "Fritz" died in August, 1966 and Anton, who married Grace Velma Jack on January 19, 1916. Anton died March 1963.
