Although Belinda's father was an abolitionist in sympathy and defended the rights of free blacks and slaves, he also believed states had a constitutional right to secede and he supported the Confederacy. The family moved back to Virginia to live on the Tuley estate "The Tuleyrie" near White Post, Clarke Co., VA while the men of the family practiced law in nearby Winchester.
Belinda's mother died in 18 and her father in 1869. The Tuleyrie" was sold in 1866 to settle her uncle Joseph Tuley Jr.'s estate, but the family continued to live together nearby:
