U.S. Congressman. Moving to Tennessee, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Franklin. Entering politics, he was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1835-39). In 1839, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1843. He was again elected to the Twenty-ninth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1845-53). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he returned to his plantation in Tennessee. With the advent of the Civil War, he served as a member of the First and Second Confederate Congresses, (1862-63). After the war he resumed activities on his plantation until his death at age 57.
