5 July 1923 - Eldred Johnson Drowned Wednesday -
Celebrating the Fourth was terminated suddenly to many Spring Grove people when news of the drowning of Eldred I. Johnson was circulated. Eldred, in company with relatives, had gone to Quandahl to spend the day and had gone in swimming with several others, when he suffered cramps and disappeared. Men from town were soon there and after about two hours search the body was found in about twelve feet of water.
12 July 1923 - Hundreds of people were unable to gain entrance to the church Saturday afternoon to pay their last sad respects to Eldred I. Johnson, announcement of whose death by drowning was briefly chronicled last week. The body, which had rested at Engell Undertaking Parlors, was taken to the home of his parents Saturday morning under guard of buddies of the late World War, which guard was maintained until two o'clock when the sad procession was started from the residence to the church where Rev. A. O. Alfsen and Rev. H. J. Wein of Winona, both spoke. Eldred, son of Mr. and Mrs. Iver D. Johnson was born in Quandahl (where he died) on September 13, 1892, moving to Spring Grove about nineteen years ago. After receiving his education he entered the employ of Nelson & Johnson which position he held until the World War when he answered his country's call for men and served with distinction long after the conflict was over, at last with the Army of Occupation in Germany. Upon his return he again took up his duties in the hardware store and negotiations were already under way for him to take over his father's interest at an early date. On April 20th, 1920, he was united in marriage to Miss Melpha O. Hallan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Hallan. To this union two children were born, one of whom died in infancy. Beside his sorrowing widow and child, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Johnson, three sisters: Miss Idella Johnson, Mrs. Arnold Krogh and Mrs. C. O. Vaaler, also numerous relatives and friends. Eldred was largely instrumental in starting the local Post of the American Legion and was its first commander. He had also served as secretary of the local fire department for several years. Eldred's always cheerful smile will be missed, not only in his home but by all the people of Spring Grove and vicinity. The funeral procession from the church to the West End Cemetery was headed by the band, followed by the Legion colors and guards, the firing squad and a large delegation of Legion members. Taps were sounded as the body was lowered to its resting place. The sympathy of the whole community is extended to the bereaved in this their sad affliction.
