Caroline's father, a silversmith, died in Norway. Her widowed mother arrived in Blackhammer, Minnesota with her six children when Caroline was about six years old.
Caroline and Brown had nine children: Martha, Bernhard, Albert, Anna, Carl , Andreas, Inga, James and Rudolph.
