US Senator. He graduated from the law department of the University of Illinois, in 1900, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Murphysboro, Illinois. He was attorney of Jackson County, (1906-08, 16-20) and a member of the Illinois State Senate, (1920-24). In 1928, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Frank L. Smith, serving until 1933. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was chairman of the Congress Committee on Privileges and Elections and practiced law until his death at age 79.
