Man charged in crash that killed two young men when pickup slammed into shop - Police say he was driving drunk

WARREN, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police have charged the driver of a truck that slammed into a Warren oil change center on Sunday, killing two people.

Twenty-five-year-old Derek Brame has been charged with 2 counts of operating while impaired causing death, 2 counts of driving while license revoked causing death, operating while impaired third offense and driving while license suspended.

The charges come as family members and close family friends of the two men killed in the crash talk about their devastating losses.

"He loved baseball, he loved his weights," said Linda Pryor, the mother of 26-year-old Kyle Dixon. "And that was my only child. And I don't have that no more...it's so sad."

John Bommarito, 21, was a student at Wayne State University, hoping to become an engineer. He had two younger brothers.

"He was Mr. Fix-It," said Jeaneane Landers, a close family friend of the Bommarito family.

Kyle and John were co-workers at a company in Warren.

Both were passengers in the pickup truck that slammed into an oil change shop early Sunday morning. It happened around 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning on 8 Mile near Ryan and left a gaping hole in the side of the building.

Even though it was John's vehicle, he was in the back seat. Police say Brame was driving. He was treated for his injuries at the hospital and then taken into police custody.

Neither family say they have ever heard of Brame.

Meantime, police are trying to determine if two cars may have been racing when the accident happened.

A Cadillac was found near the scene, and the driver told a witness the two vehicles had been drag racing. But he left before police could ask him more questions. Marijuana and about $12000 in cash were found in the Cadillac.

Police are seeking tips on anyone who may have seen either vehicle on 8 Mile around 3 a.m. Sunday.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS:

Kyle Dixon: Visitation: Friday, September 23rd at AJ Desmond & Sons, 2600 Crooks, Troy, MI, 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Service - Saturday, September 24 at 10:00 a.m. at same location.

John Bommarito: Visitation will be held on Tuesday for the family and Wednesday for the public from 4:00 – 9:00 pm with a Rosary at 7:00 pm.

John will lie in repose on Thursday from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 am at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church 467 Fairford, Grosse Pointe Woods. John will be interred at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Twp.
