Civil War Union Solider. Private Sterling enlisted as a recruit in Company C, 13th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry (a regiment that had been in existance since August 1862) on January 3, 1864. His tenure with the regiment lasted slightly over eight months, for he died in the field on August 6, 1864, of wounds received in action near Atlanta, Georgia.
