Kewanee, IL - Florentine B. "Flora" (Ballester) Alvarado, 77, of Kewanee died at 11:07 a.m. Thursday September 20, 2007, at the Kewanee Hospital Emergency room.

She was born April 22, 1930 in France. The family lived in Marseilles, France where her brothers were active in the French Resistance during World War II. The family was deported by boxcar to a detention camp near Frejns, France on the Mediterranean coast for a period of time. Flora met Barlo Alvarado in Marseilles shortly after the war where he was stationed with the U.S. Army. They were married in Marseilles on December 16, 1948.

He survives as well as two sons, Robert Alvarado of Ottawa, IL and Bruce (Mary) of Indianapolis, IN; two daughters, Kathy Alvarado of Freeport, IL and Jackie Leimer of Chicago, IL; and four grandchildren, Jordan, David, Jack, and Mark also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents and many sisters and brothers.

Flora was the director of the Social Service Agency in Kewanee for 12 years, retiring in 1992. She was active in many civic organizations including the League of Women Voters, the Business and Professional Women's Club, and others.

She was presented the Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce in 1993. Flora also had been honored on the Wall of Fame at Blackhawk East College.
