THOMPSONVILLE - Wilbur E. Collingwood, 63, of Thompsonville, died after a long battle with cancer, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at The Maples-Benzie County Medical Care Facility in Frankfort.
He was born in Joyfield Township Feb. 11, 1940, the son of Bert Leighton and Minnie Elizabeth (Six) Collingwood.
At age 2, Wilbur lost his mother to cancer. He and his father then resided in numerous places around Benzie and Manistee counties, until his father passed away when Wilbur was 16. Wilbur then became the foster child of John and Betty Milarch in Bear Lake. He lived in the area his entire life.
A 1959 graduate of Arcadia High School, Wilbur was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He worked as a milkman for Ideal Dairy, and for many years was an employee of Nugent Farms. In his spare time, Wilbur loved to hunt and fish, and also enjoyed making woodcrafts.
Wilbur is survived by his children, Sally Ann (Fritz) Garvin of Newaygo, Connie Lynn (Brian) Lindsay of Beulah, Wilbur Leighton (Missi) Collingwood of Benzonia, Lisa Marie (Mike) McCatty of Traverse City and Jason Eugene Collingwood of Traverse City; nine grandchildren, Shaun and Megan Garvin, Jessica, Brianne and Andrew Lindsay, Kathleen and Leighton Collingwood, and Courtney and Alexander McCatty; his foster mother, Betty Milarch; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
On March 9, 1963, in Beulah, Wilbur married Kathleen Marlain Sikorski, who preceded him in death in 1994. He was also preceded in death by his parents; foster father, John Milarch; three brothers, George Collingwood, Walter Mattison and Leslie Mattison; and two sisters, Iris Cole and Marie Morton.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25, at the funeral home, with Pastor Dan Ingersoll officiating. Interment will be in the Homestead Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home.
