Military Figure. He was a Nazi ace jet fighter pilot during World War II. He operated over the Russian Eastern Front and amassed 255 downings of Russian aircraft. Major Nowotny was placed in charge of the fledgling 1st squadron comprised of newly developed jet fighters. In the closing days of the war, suffering the same fate as most Nazi ace pilots, he was killed when his jet fighter crashed near Achmer, Germany. Only minimal body remains were recovered at the crash site, yet his identification was made from his military medal, "The Knight's Cross," which were found at the scene. His remains were buried in the family plot at Zentralfriedhof Cemetery located in Vienna, Austria.
