Paul George Locke, 88, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at his home.
Born June 11, 1914, in Sedalia, Mo., he was raised in Paducah, Ky.
He attended Washington University in St. Louis on a football scholarship, was invited to play in the first All Star College Football game and was recruited for the first professional football league. During college he sang with the St. Louis Metropolitan Opera and was known as the "singing gridiron." He worked more than 40 years for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. A World War II veteran, he was a major in the Army Corps of Engineers. He served in the fighting 69 th Infantry Division and was public works and utilities officer for the Vienna Area Command in Austria. He taught Sunday school for 50 years, was a deacon at East Side Baptist Church as well as a member of the Fort Smith Exchange Club, and served five terms on the Sebastian County Quorum Court.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Blanche Lillian Locke.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Blanche Meriwether Locke; three children, Margaret Moore of Maumelle, Paulette Lock Johnson of Fayetteville and George Lock of Natural Dam; two sisters, Ruby Wise of Paducah, Ky., and Clara Howell of Burgin Ky.; a brother, David Locke of Columbia, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at East Side Baptist Church. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith.
