Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. Served as a Private in Company B, 47th Ohio Infantry. At the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 3, 1863, he was a member of a party that volunteered and attempted to run the enemy's batteries with a steam tug and two barges loaded with ammunition stores.
