Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was a prisoner of war. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company B, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on July 30, 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. His citation reads "Instead of retreating or surrendering when the works were captured, regardless of his personal safety, continued to return the enemy's fire until he was captured.
