Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He began his military service on September 15, 1861 with a brother. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania, Virginia. His citation reads "Capture of flag." He was promoted to Corporal and was wounded at Ferderickburg, Virginia. He was discharged on June 29, 1865 and moved to Blanchard, Michigan, where he is buried. He was also a resident of Port Angeles, Washington, for 30 years. Preparatory to FDR's March 1937 inauguration, he was invited as a guest of the President, as he was the 'oldest living recipient of the Medal of Honor,' and very likely the last Civil War M.O.H. recipient. As age took its toll, he retired to the Retsil Veterans Home, Retsil, Washington, where he died October 11, 1937. His body was sent to Blanchard, Michigan for burial. He died with only a niece surviving.
