U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1852, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1853 and commenced to practice law in Atlanta, Georgia. He was solicitor general of the Atlanta circuit (1861-65), reporter of the Georgia Supreme Court (1867-72) and Georgia Attorney General (1872-77). In 1879 he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1887. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 65.
