Ralls woman dead at 118

Emma Lowery Massey of Ralls, who may have been the oldest person in the world, died Monday night. The nursing home where she lived put her age at 118.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the Petersburg Cemetery. Petersburg resident Jesse James Nave, who cared for her in her final years, is scheduled to officiate.
Although Massey never had the records to prove her age, friends said they believed she was 118.
She once told Nave that her birthday was Jan. 16, 1879, which would have made her 120. The Ralls Nursing Home, where she lived since 1990, recorded her birthdate as being Jan. 15, 1881.
Either way, she would have held the Guinness Book of World Records distinction of being the world's oldest person had she had an official birth record.
Massey was a native of Louisiana, having moved to the South Plains at age 11, she said in a 1998 interview. She lived in Petersburg much of her life.
Having already outlived her two children, Massey, at age 107, needed a little extra care, Nave once said. He took over her finances and legal affairs to protect her from others who left her in debt.
At the home, Massey was known for her high spirits and love of gospel music as well as listening to Bible passages on tape.
Massey was also known for her daily routine of coffee and snuff, which Nave brought to her by the case once per month, nursing staff members said.
''She was still coming to the cafeteria for her coffee two weeks ago,'' home administrator Faye Houston said Wednesday.
