According to microfilm records from familysearch.org James C. Gallagher was born to James Gallagher and Jane Donnelly on 22 Jun 1864 in Coalisland, County Tyrone, Ireland. That date of birth conflicts with the information on his death certificate, but his mother's maiden name matches up with the death certificate.

The year of his immigration to the US, from US Census records, is also conficting. Anywhere between 1880 and 1886 James C Gallagher arrived in the US, and apparently alone. His birth family stayed in Ireland with the family of James and Jane (Donnelly) Gallagher showing up in County Tyrone on both the 1901 and 1911 Irish Censuses. According to these census records James C. was one of 12 children born to James and Jane (Donnelly) Gallagher.

James C. (we never do find out what the C stands for) first shows up on the 1892 New York State Census, employed as a laborer, married to Bertha Heck, living in Huron, Wayne, New York with her parents. He and Bertha eventually had 14 children together, 7 of whom died. He lived in the Huron and Rose, Wayne, NY area until his death on 31 January 1922 at the home of his daughter Margaret. Cause of death - Bronchitis & Chronic Gastritis. His death certificate listed his marital status as divorced.

There are many questions yet to be answered about this man who was my maternal great grandfather.
