Based on his father's obituary, Robert was born in either Albemarle or Botetourt County, Virginia. He married Katherine Lewis Pollock in Reistertown, Maryland on 30 June 1909. The had at least one child, Katherine Pollock, and divorced in 1926.
Robert worked for the Portner family for many years, as Secretary of the Capital Construction Company, Manager of the Portner Apartments, and Secretary to Anna Portner. After Mrs. Portner's death in 1912, he practiced law for many years in Washington, D.C.
He is buried near his parents in his great-grandfather Robert Gwathmey’s plot.
