Samuel came from England with 2 of his brothers. After immigrating to Canada, he worked his way down to Texas, (after living in Pittsville, Illinois a while), where he founded the town of Gabriel Mills, (later to be re-named Liberty Hill, Texas), on the North San Gabriel River, Williamson Co., Texas. After first arriving, he and his family lived in a dugout, which was common in those times. The Indians were still living in the area. His son, Andrew was the first white child born in Williamson County.
Postmaster and co-founder of Mt. Horeb Founder of Masonic Lodge #137, Liberty Hills, Texas. In 1856, Samuel and B. K. Stewart each deeded twenty-five acres of land to the Lodge on which they decided to erect a two-story frame building, making them the founding fathers.
