The son of William Alexander & Harriet (Starry) Eichelberger, in 1860 he was a teacher living presumably living in Latimore Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg July 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there July 18 as a private with Co. D, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 6, 1864. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Carlisle February 7, 1865, as a private with Co. M, 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry (64th Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 1, 1865.

He married Lydia A. Spangler and fathered Minnie A. (b. 10/27/68 - married William H. Hayberger), William (b. 1870), Anna A. (b. 04/08/72 - married Herbert Ashland Brenizer), Willis E. (b. 08/01/74), Mervin E. (b. 1879), and Clayton H. (b. 03/01/86). In 1890, he lived in Tyrone Township, Adams County, where he died from "abdominal dropsy."
