He was the son of Henry Louis and Letitia Irene McCualsky Ruf. He was married to Phyllis June Alton in Parkersburg WV. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1946 and attended Marietta College, Marietta OH. He served in the U.S. Army of Occupation in Japan from 1946-48. He retired from Walker Systems Inc (formerly the Parkersburg Rig & Reel Co.)
