Barry's grandfather, Albert Britnell, emigrated to Toronto from Yorkshire, England and in 1893 opened a bookstore on lower Yonge Street. The business was eventually taken over by Albert's son Roy, In 1956, a third generation entered the business when twenty year old Barry left his studies at the University of Toronto and joined his father in the running of the store. Barry Britnell, only forty-four years of age, died of cancer on October 1, 1980. Today, the Albert Britnell Book Shop, now managed by Barry's widow Mary Ellen, remains as one of the country's best and most respected bookstores.
