Woman, 71, Estherville, Dies; Rites Tuesday
Funeral services will be held in the United Methodist Church of Estherville Tuesday for Mrs. Lucien (Vada Esther) Thomas, 71.
Mrs. Thomas died Saturday afternoon in Holy Family Hospital of Hotchkins Disease. She had been in failing health for seven years.
The daughter of the late Mr. Van Sickle and Mrs. Mabel Russell, she was born in West Union on April 25, 1898. She made her home with her maternal grandparents in Fredericksburg.
Mrs. Thomas was married on Nov. 28, 1918, in Waterloo to Lucien Thomas.
She retired in 1960 following 12 years of employment at Holy Family Hospital.
She had been a member of Rebecca Lodge, World War I Barracks Auxiliary, United Methodist Church of Estherville and was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband Lucien of Estherville; her mother, Mrs. Mabel Russell of Fredericksburg; three sons, Robert of Rossville, Ga., Derald of Lynn Grove and Ronald of Des Moines; four daughters, Neva (Mrs. Howard Lindsey) Murray, Utah, Jeneveve (Mrs. Ralph Maddux) of Colorado Springs, Helena Thomas of Estherville and Mary Lou (Mrs. Eldon Spencer) of Emerald, Wis.; 25 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, a half sister, Mrs. Neva Mullen, Minneapolis, and a half-brother, Stuart Cottrell, Los Angeles.
Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her father, a son John, and a daughter Louise.
Family services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the United Methodist Church of Estherville. Public services will begin at 2 p.m. The Rev. Richard Pearson will officiate.
Burial will be in East Side Cemetery.
