Walter, a retired farmer and single man, died in Cune-Brooks Hospital at Carthage, MO from injuries suffered in a automobile rollover accident eight miles east of Carthage in Jasper County. Walter A Jones, 56, of Lockwood was killed, and King Gilmore, 50, of South Greenfield, Route 2, was seriously injured in an automobile accident on Highway 66, near Avilla, Saturday evening about seven o'clock. They had been to Carthage and had started home.
A car driving behind the wrecked car, stated that Gilmore, who was driving, lost control and ran into the ditch, striking a telephone pole. The car was overturned and the two men were thrown through the top, and about 50 feet from the car. They were taken to a Carthage hospital where Jones died about an hour after the accident, from shock, leg fractures and a head injury. Gilmore is reported as improved at the hospital.
Jones had lived at Lockwood five years, and made his home with a niece, Mrs. Leonard Spittler and her husband. He was born and reared in Dade County and had lived near Everton and Greenfield all his life. He was not married. Walter is survived by four sisters: Mrs. John Steeley of Lockwood; Mrs. Bert Fortner of Long Beach, California; Mrs. Will Pint of South Greenfield and Mrs. Bert Morris of Miller; and a brother Perry Jones of Lockwood.
Funeral services and burial were at Antioch Church.
