Pvt. 4/25/61 at Fairfax C.H., prom. to 4th Cpl. 5/24/61; captured near Fx. C.H. 6/9/61 and sent to Old Capitol Prison; admitted 6/18/61 to U.S. Army Hosp. with rubeola (measles); AWOL 12/61; paroled date/place unknown; joined 43rd Btln. Va. Cav. 3/63; captured, convicted of violating his parole and sent to the U.S. Penitentiary at Albany, N.Y. w/Pvt. Philip Trammel and held until close of war; owned "Hope Park Mill" on Pope's Head Rd., Fx. Co. and the Hotel in Fairfax; m. Mary Isabella Fox, Wash., D.C.; brother of Samuel L. & Wm. A. Barnes; b-i-l of Pvt. Frank G. Fox; mbr. John Q. Marr Camp U.C.V.; d. in Wash., D.C. 10/1897, "consumption"; bur. Fx. Cem.
He married Mary Isabella Fox d/o Gabriel Fox and Susan Jane Millan. Per a diary of Susanna Summers Clarke posted by Bart Gripenstraw, his wife Mary was alive after 1917 and had 7 beautiful daughters in their time.

According to daughter Irene Lee Barnes Dayton, in an Aug. 7, 1933 published article (Washington DC Evening Star): Captain Jack Barnes was captured and imprisoned at Old Capitol Prison and sentenced to death by hanging. His wife, Mary Isabella Fox Barnes, went to the White House and "sat in a waiting room there for five days in an effort to see President Johnson. Lincoln had been shot not long before. On the sixth day she told an attendant at the White House that she could wait no longer and her please finally moved him to speak to the President about the case. President Johnson immediately gave mother an audience. Tearfully she pleaded for father's life, but the President, tenderly but firmly, told her that prisoners of war were not being exchanged and he could
do nothing. Mother started to take her leave and the door was about to close behind her when the President had a sudden change of heart. He called her back and wrote out a pardon as mother looked on. She always declared Johnson's eyes were filled with tears when she thanked him for his generosity."
