Hastings was the oldest son of Captain Henry Arthur and Isabella Mae (Hastings) Dial. They landed at Dial's Landing in Virginia about 1746.

Hastings served as a Colonel in the British Army during the Revolutionary War. On October 30th, 1767, he was given a large tract of land in Laurens, Co by King George III of England.

He was one of the wealthiest men in South Carolina and was a Tory. He was a Baptist and lived in the area of Boyd's Mill-Ware Shoals Road. He is buried in the McDaniel-Dial cemetery near Laurens. The legacy of Hastings Dial and Rebecca Abercrombie Dial to their children was of high character, strong leadership and a substantial fortune.
